Managing Payphone Barring

Barring Calls from Payphone Numbers to Freephone Numbers

BT collect from Communication Providers (CP) a pence per minute levy that is cost recovery for originating calls from payphones to freephone numbers (beginning 080 and 050). This is called the Payphone Access Charge (PAC).

This cost is passed onto you by your Service Provider (SP). If required, to assist you in minimising the risk of incurring these costs and if your customers specifically request that they do not want to receive calls from payphones to their freephone numbers, there is the capability through the Advanced Services Platform to manage which of your freephone Service Numbers accept calls from payphones.

It is important to note that the list of currently active payphones is sent to CP’s by BT once a month and is therefore static. As such the SP cannot guarantee that using the payphone barring facility will completely remove the risk of PAC costs being incurred.

To bar calls from public payphones please see the Call Barring Section .
